Backcountry skiing is a lot like surfing. You never really know what the conditions are going to be until you get there. Sure you can study the weather forecast before and leading up to your trip; but the fact of the matter is, there are so many factors that can completely screw up that perfect forecast, that, until you’re skinning up the side of that mountain, you may be in for a good day, an epic ski or one of those “it’s better than being at the office” days.
A couple years ago we made the drive out to the Kettle Range in eastern Washington State, a somewhat remote chain of mountains that receives very little ski touring traffic and attention. Fortunately for us, mother nature was kind.
